Control Offshore

Our offshore control sites are parallel to the hardened shoreline control sites. To determine how far offshore we sampled, we estimated the distance between one of our other habitats, the breakwaters, and their closest shoreline. This distance was how far offshore from the control hardened shoreline we determined would be the control offshore habitat. Keeping the sampling distance consistent across different sites is critical to collecting comparable data between our control and restoration sites. Offshore communities are sampled to compare differences in community composition between the control and restoration sites. The communities seen in the control offshore sites are what we would expect the fish community to look like in Project GreenShores I and II if the restoration had not taken place.

Half of our offshore control samples were empty (11 out of 22 videos = 50%).. In the videos where we did see animals, Hermit crabs and pinfish (4 out of 22 videos = 18%) were the most commonly seen species in this habitat. Values are the Frequency of Occurrence, being the percentage of total videos (n = 22) in which each species was observed.
