Species

Project Greenshores I and II are home to a diverse range of species that have economic, ecological, and cultural significance on the Gulf Coast. The breakwaters, constructed in 2003, 2007, and 2022, not only protect the shoreline but also act as a safe haven for the high diversity of species in the area. The sites’ high species diversity is likely due to the wide variety of habitats in a small area, including the constructed breakwaters, oyster reefs, and planted marsh mounds. Below, you’ll find links to more information about the most common and important species featured in our videos, along with some of our favorite finds!

The frequency of occurrence of common species across habitats at Greenshores. Frequency of occurrence is the percentage of videos in each habitat in which each species was observed. Habitats are color-coded as per the overview map of Greenshores. The size of each fish symbol reflects the percentage of videos in each habitat in which that species or group was seen. For example, gray snapper were seen in 80% of breakwater videos, but only 5% of Control Hardened Shoreline videos.
